Small companies ended 2008 with a laundry list of troubles, with sales slow, bank lending frozen, and health care and credit-card costs soaring. Here's what to expect in 2009 on 7 key issues.

Health care: Still on the critical list
The cost of providing health insurance to employees continued to skyrocket, jumping by an average of 5.7% per employee after a 6.1% hike in 2007, according to a study by consulting firm Mercer. A survey by the National Federation of Independent Businesses found that health care was the number-one concern of small business owners, prompting the NFIB to become a major backer of an advertising campaign calling on the presidential candidates to make health reform a priority.

This year: President-elect Obama has endorsed a sweeping reform plan that would create a new National Health Insurance Exchange to allow more businesses access to insurance pools. Such pools can both negotiate for better overall rates and offer relief to small companies that might otherwise see their premiums soar because of a single sick employee. In Congress, various bills are kicking around, but these may end up being swept aside by the recent "Call to Action" issued by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.). It echoes Obama's plan, but with the added wrinkle that coverage would be mandatory. That's a controversial measure, but one that health experts say is key to keeping premiums low - and it could help get insurance companies on board.
Most observers expect health-care reform to wait until after an economic stimulus package is dealt with, but not too long after. The forecast: Smaller reforms are likely in 2009, followed by a full-on throwdown over a major health insurance overhaul in 2010.

New businesses turn bad neighborhoods into great business locations.

(FORTUNE Small Business) -- "Are you crazy?"

That was his wife's withering assessment of the spot he had chosen to open his first store, Jamie Wilke recalls, and she probably had every reason to question her husband's sanity. Oconomowoc was a faded resort village in central Wisconsin. Many of the stores in its shabby downtown sported "Going Out of Business" signs. That's where Wilke was determined to open a furniture store. Understandably, his wife was worried. Was there a single soul eager to buy his wares in Oconomowoc? Would he go broke?

Hardly. Wilke's store, Jamie Wilke Interiors, opened fall 2000, and from the start the place was jammed with customers. Oconomowoc lies in the heart of the state's Lake District, and as it turned out, lakefront development was booming. The region's newcomers - young urbanites and wealthy retirees - were eager to outfit their second homes with his edgy, sophisticated pieces.

Call him a retail pioneer. Wilke is one of those rare entrepreneurs who can find a hip place before it's hip. Some pioneers plunge into crime-ridden slums, risking not just their capital but their lives. Others seek out lonely rural locations and hope that the market follows them to the end of their dirt road.

Not all are in it for the money. Some see their entrepreneurship as a social responsibility wrapped in capitalism. That was partly the case with Lauren Thomas, 30, and her mother, Debra Thomas, 54. Last summer, the two opened Ladels, the only children's bookstore in Detroit.

"This city needed a place like Ladels," Thomas says. "We just knew it before the city did."

Many retail pioneers seem to have a sixth sense about up-and-coming neighborhoods - but there's also science involved. Some pioneers study sidewalk traffic or the cars parked on the street. Some meander around watching shoppers make purchases (beer or wine, sushi or a sub). Still others pore over real estate data. After reading about a spurt of home-buying activity around Oconomowoc, Wilke drove around, poking into the coves around its lakes.

"Every other house was undergoing renovation," he says. "People were pouring lots of money into these properties." For him, that was evidence enough to gamble on.

Four years ago, John Longacre was a 31-year-old real estate investor who stumbled across a boarded-up bar in a rundown neighborhood. For two years, the bar had been for sale. Its windows were barred and filthy. Trash drifted into every corner on the block. Still, Longacre thought the place had possibilities. Housing in the neighborhood was affordable. Newcomers were renovating the row houses, many of them historic. Nearby was a busy hospital. Public transportation was accessible. To Longacre, it was a chance to test his mettle as an urban entrepreneur. He bought the bar, replaced the tiny plexiglass portholes with huge custom-made windows, and installed fancy light fixtures.

"People warned us they'd be stolen," he says. "They weren't."

n 2003, he opened the South Philadelphia Tap Room, featuring craft beers and wild boar burritos. Popular with young professionals, the bar is busy every night. Unprofitable for its first two years, the Tap Room is a moneymaker these days. In fact, in January, Longacre expanded, doubling the bar's size to 2,000 square feet. Area property values have soared, and dozens of new shops have opened.

Of course, trailblazing poses challenges. Customers may be leery at first to venture into unknown neighborhoods, especially if the areas have a reputation for crime or vandalism. Local vendors can be scarce. Town or municipal services are often limited or nonexistent. Wilke spent $10,000 on flowers and greenery to spruce up the exterior of his new store. He also swept the sidewalks and curbs in front of his store daily. (Oconomowoc was a bit lax about keeping its downtown tidy.)

Pioneers aren't settlers, though. In October, Wilke opened a new store in the Third Ward, a rapidly gentrifying commercial district in Milwaukee. Mirroring a shift that's happening all over the U.S., suburban empty nesters are selling their four-bedroom homes and snapping up condos in the city.

His wife's reaction to his latest proposal: "There are rats bigger than our children!" This time, Wilke sees her skepticism as a good omen.

5. Blogvertise
Kalau disini sepertinya modal utama yang diperhatikan yaitu PR, dan umur blog minimal 3 bulan serta jumlah postingan. Terutama yang minimal PR3 bisa sering dapat GBT. Make Money From Your Hobby.

Whether you knit, or write, or make photographs, or grow a vegetable garden, or tinker with cars, or build web sites, or collect ancient coins — you can make money from your hobby.

I’m not saying it’s possible to get rich by playing your violin at weddings, or by weaving baskets from pine needles, but earning money from a hobby is a nice way to get paid for doing something you would do anyhow.

This article is the first in a series that will explore how to turn a hobby into a source of side income. In the weeks and months ahead, I’ll describe general best practices, discuss potential pitfalls, and provide case studies culled from my friends, and from the stories of readers like you. (If you’d like to share your experience, please drop me a line.)

First, by way of introduction, here are some ground-rules for making money from hobbies.

Focus on something you love
Pursue something you’re passionate about. Choose a hobby that you enjoy, and find a way to make money from it. Don’t choose a hobby simply because it might make money and then dive into it with that aim in mind. You should be doing this hobby because you love it; any side-income should be secondary.

I love to write. I was struggling with debt. I began to read personal finance books, and then to summarize what I’d learned for my personal web site. From this, Get Rich Slowly was born. Now I make over a thousand dollars a month writing about personal finance. But I didn’t start this for the money — I started this because I was passionate about the subject.

Keep it fun. Don’t let it become a chore.

Be creative
If you’re interested in making money from a hobby but don’t know where to start, think outside the box. What skills do you have that others don’t? Define the term “hobby” broadly. Find something that you can do that most others cannot, something for which other people might be willing to pay.

At my day job, I have a customer whose wife loves to cook. She turned this hobby into a part-time job as a personal chef. She prepares meals in advance for wealthy clients. She spends a few hours a day preparing a week-long menu for people who pay her handsomely for her time.

I have a friend who likes to travel. One day he discovered that he could subsidize his journeys by writing about the places he visited, and by taking photographs. Now every couple of years he takes an all expense paid vacation. He’s doing something he’d do anyhow, and it doesn’t cost him a dime.

Don’t force it
Your hobby will not make you rich. In most cases, it won’t even net you enough to allow you to quit your day job. It’s quite possible, however, to earn enough money to make the hobby self-sustaining, to keep yourself in new tools and equipment.

My brother builds speakers and works with audio equipment as a hobby. He makes some money at it. (”Spending money,” he says.) Jeff notes, “It’s not hard to make money from a hobby. What’s difficult is trying to turn it into an actual business. Moving from a hobby to a business is a pain-in-the-ass.”

Often when you try to take your hobby to the next level, the joy goes out of it. Suddenly the extra income just isn’t worth it. When I tried to turn my computer-building hobby into a business, I hated it. There’s a balance to be achieved, and if you can find it, you can have a fun while earning extra income.

Don’t underestimate your ability
It’s easy to discount your abilities. When you truly love something, your prolonged experience can give you skills and knowledge that you don’t appreciate.
For example, I have a love for early 20th-century American pop culture. My brain is filled with facts and anecdotes about once-famous recording artists. I sometimes find myself under the impression that everybody knows who Billy Murray was, or is familiar with the song “Ukulele Lady”. But this isn’t common knowledge — it’s specialized.

The same concept holds true for you and your hobby. Know a lot about Napoleonic warfare? Start a blog about Admiral Nelson. Spend time tinkering with bicycles? Open a small-scale bike repair service. Not everybody knows what you know. Don’t sell yourself short.

Market yourself
This can be difficult. In order to actually earn income, you need customers. But just as most people have a tendency to underestimate their abilities, they also tend be uncomfortable with self-promotion.

There’s no shame in mentioning your money-making hobby to friends, family, and neighbors. You needn’t be pushy. Just mention it at natural points in the conversation. If you’ve decided to do some woodworking for cash, mention this when your uncle mentions he wants to buy a new bookshelf.
Marketing can be subtle, but it’s an absolute necessity if you hope to earn money from your hobby. People need to know you’re available before they can hire you.

Hone your skill
Practice, practice and practice. The more time and energy you’re willing to devote to your hobby, the better you will become. The better you become, the more likely that you’ll be able to earn money from it.

Photography is a terrific example. If you’re willing to make a hundred images a day, you can improve your skills quickly, especially if you teach yourself about composition. You may never become a professional photographer this way, but you can develop your skill to the point where you can sell images to stock photo agencies, or enter (and win) photography contests.

Some people are born with natural talent. Most of us have to work at it.

Conclusion
why should you care about making money from hobbies? Remember: the wealth equation has two sides. You accumulate wealth by reducing expenses and by increasing income. Often we only focus only on our careers when it comes to “increasing income”. But there are other ways to make money. One of the best is to harness a hobby.

This is an especially good technique if you’re stuck in a low-wage job. And sometimes a person can turn a money-making hobby into a career. Who doesn’t want a job doing something he loves?

President signs 'PERPU'

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a government regulation in liew of law, or locally known as Perpu, to provide better guarantee for depositors amid the worsening global financial crisis.

Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa said Monday the President signed the regulation after a series of meetings with related officials on Sunday night and Monday morning at his residence at Cikeas, Bogor.

But Hatta did not disclose details of the regulation.

Currently, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati is at the House of Representatives to present the regulations to the House leaders.

Last Friday, Sri Mulyani met with House Speaker Agung Laksono to discussed about the crisis, and the possibility for the government to issue the government regulation.

Earlier, politicians at the National Mandate Party suggested that the government increased the guarantee coverage to depositors up to Rp 2.5 billion. Currently, the government guarantee only covers those of up to Rp 100 million.

The proposal follows a finding that the majority of 77 million depositors have more than Rp 100 million deposits, and 90 percent of them have below Rp 2.5 billion in their deposits. (rid)(taken from jakrta post)

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are.

After that, we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire.
The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when?

Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Alfred D. Souza said: "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life.

But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life".

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time ... and remember that time waits for no one.

Nothing can break the law of risk and reward, but a diversified portfolio can bend it. When you spread your money properly among different asset types, a rise in some will offset a fall in others, muting your overall risk without a commensurate drop in return. It's the closest thing to a free lunch there is in investing. To make the alchemy work, you must load up on assets whose up and down cycles don't run in sync: stocks (both U.S. and foreign, as well as large-company and small), bonds (of varying maturities), cash, real estate and commodities.

5. IT'S THE PORTFOLIO, STUPID

Most investors concentrate on trying to choose the best stock and pick the perfect moment to buy or sell. It's a waste. What really matters to your long-term returns is asset allocation--that is, how you split up your portfolio.

Some say it accounts for 40% of the variation in investors' returns; others (like the original researchers) say 90%. But no one refutes that it's major. 6. AVERAGE IS THE NEW BEST

Here's the logic behind index funds, which aim simply to match the return of a market index: The average fund in any market will always earn that market's return (because in aggregate investors are the market) minus expenses. Since index funds match the market but have much smaller expenses than other funds, they will always beat the average fund in the long run. investing is a big bet on an unknowable future. The mark of wisdom is accepting just how unknowable it is. Granted, that's not easy. Our brains are built to think the future will be like the near past. And we're too ready to act on the predictions of pundits, who are no more clued in than we are about what lies ahead.

Being humble in the face of uncertainty keeps you from costly mistakes. You won't jump on yesterday's bandwagon. And before you invest, you'll be more likely to ask a key question: "What if I'm wrong?"

2. TAKE CALCULATED RISKS
He that is overcautious will accomplish little.

The returns you get are proportionate to the risk you take. This is a fundamental law of the markets. It's why five-year CDs typically pay more than six-month ones and why you're disappointed if your emerging markets fund does no better than its stodgy blue-chip stable mate. History unequivocally supports this "no free lunch" principle. Going back to 1926, stocks (high risk) have paid more than government bonds (medium risk), which in turn have beaten low-risk Treasury bills.
Among many, many other things, this law suggests:
